The Checklist - Week of Oct 27th
« Previous | October 27th, 2008 | Next »We’re back this week, and what a treat greets us!
Both Secret Invasion and Final Crisis have new instalments this week, plus the usual tie-ins. Also, we take a look at the newest Ultimate Spider-Man story.
All this, and we are but days away from the newest episode of The Watchtower where we’ll go toe-to-toe on Secret Invasion, Final Crisis, and much, much more!
SECRET INVASION #7
Whaaaaaaaaaaaat!?!?! When the first issue of this series hit, I said that it was the best book I had read all year. This is a rare case where not only am I happily wrong, but a book has actually lapped itself. SI-7 is an incredible ride of action and story, and it is told so well that every panel seems to flow into each other. The twists and turns in this issue are huge (literally) and there was more than one moment when I gasped out loud. Unbelievably good, waiting for Issue 8 is going to be like waiting for Christmas.
FINAL CRISIS #4
Uh, OK. I will say this off the bat: This is the best issue of this series so far. That said though, I still feel like I am coming in halfway through the movie with each instalment of this book. This story has a huge amount of potential, but the incoherent storytelling just throws me off every time. I feel like huge chunks of things are missing, and I don’t entirely follow what’s going on. Issue 4 does its best to correct that, and has a much simpler plot, but in the end I still remain undecided about this book. All I can do is hold on tight and hope.
NEW AVENGERS #46
It’s always nice to see Billy Tan back on and Avengers book. This issue not only fills us in on how The Hood’s Bad-Guy Syndicate came to find itself smack-dab in the middle of Secret Invasion, but also lends some history to the origin of The Hood itself. A pretty good book for a tie-in that was only partially a tie-in.
FINAL CRISIS: SUBMIT
This one-shot aims to fill in the blanks between Final Crisis #3 and #4, and does so fairly admirably. DC should seriously think about numbering these books so we know which minis and one-shots to read before and after each Final Crisis issue. That all said, why wasn’t this story included in Final Crisis? It was just as good, Grant Morrison wrote it, and it ties into the story perfectly. So why did it have to be a separate book? Somewhat frustrating, but not an entirely bad book.
UILTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #127
Another good story here, as we find out the fate of Gwen “Carnage” Stacy. I especially like Immonen’s layouts in this issue. Every page feels like a splash page even though the images are somewhat static. I’d be lying if I said that this didn’t feel a little bit like a filler-story, simply because most of us are anticipating the Ultimate Spider-Man Annual due out soon, as well as Ultimatum. However, I’ll take USM’s filler over most Event books any day.
