The Checklist - Week of Sept 8th

This week’s edition of The Checklist focuses more on quantity than quality.

I won’t lie, I’ve been crazy busy, and without sleep for a few days now. The good news is that usually this kind of thing makes me hilarious (in my own mind anyway). The bad news is that it means I haven’t really had the time to write up reviews at the usual length I do.

As always you’ll be able to hear much more in-depth thoughts during The Forecast on this week’s Watchtower. Until then though, I give you this:

Marvel Apes #1 (of 4 )
Yeah, I bit. It wasn’t as horrible as I thought it was going to be, but I fear it is destined to be a trade people give away for free with purchase.

Amazing Spider-Man #570
The latest edition of New Ways To Die featured a whole lot of Venom on Anti-Venom Action, brilliantly pencilled by JRJ. The ending of the book seemed a little weak, and anything to do with Menace instantly bores me, but still one of the best Spidey tales since Brand New Day kicked off.

DCU: Last Will and Testament One-shot
The more I thought about it, the better I liked this book. Initially the thought of a story about Geo-Force didn’t exactly fill me with glee, but Meltzer handled it perfectly, and tied it into the current situation (I refuse to say Crisis) in the DCU.

The Boys #22
The Boys is awesome. If you aren’t reading it, you deserved to be punched by Garth Ennis left to Warren Ellis’ devices.

Buffy #18
In spite of probably the most uncomfortable sexual joke ever told by a 17 year old Minotaur, this book rocked. I wasn’t sure about crossing the Buffy-verse with the time of Fray, but so far it is paying off in spades.

Supergirl #33
We see some rare character development here as Supergirl grows up a bit and faces some of her actions. However, that is overshadowed by the dumbest plot device ever, and I quote:
“How is she overcoming the Mind-wrym spell?”
“Because she’s Supergirl!”
… well, OK then.

Spawn #182
(sigh) When is McFarlane getting back on this book?

DevilSlayer: Dead of Night #1
This was a pretty decent book that broke with the traditional war-comic traditions. The last page is the shocker, which to me means it took a bit too long to get to it, but in the end it’s worth it.

El Diablo #1
This looked really cool on the shelf. That is all.

Secret Invasion: Frontline #3 (of 5 )
This was the only Secret Invasion book that came out this week, so it was nice to have a bit of a breather. The story itself isn’t bad, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t skimming most of it.

Punisher: War Journal #23
This is the merciful end of the Jigsaw story, and like the rest of the story the ending was a disappointment. However, the situation The Punisher finds himself in at the end of the book is a compelling one, and probably save this title from landing on my “cut” list.

Green Lantern #43
The ret-con continues, and does so entertainingly. The only letdown was the last page that just sort of abruptly ended. As the second last part of the story, I would have liked to see some kind of cliff-hanger.

Teen Titans #62
A book about a dog. But he’s an evil dog! The only interesting part of this issue was the departure of Ms. Martian. Yeah, that was it.

Titans #4
This book wraps up the first arc for our newly reunited former-teen titans. It’s kinda hard to understand where this book fits into the DCU because the team is comprised of a lot of people who are doing other things. Cheesy ending at any rate, but a decent book overall.

Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane Season 2 #2
A fun and light-hearted read. I really enjoy how Rousseau’s pencils bring a maturity to the story, but Moore’s writing keeps it fun. Best volume in the series so far.
