The Checklist - Week of June 30, Part I

After a short hiatus The Checklist is back!

This week was such a heavy week that the only way I could fit it all in was to split it into two parts! In Part I, we have Final Crisis, Superman, Captain America and more!

Tomorrow, in Part II, we’ll look at Ultimates 3, both Avengers titles, and more! But the fun doesn’t stop there! On the next Watchtower, we’ll have the usual Forecast segment and the Catch-Up is only a few days away!

Whew, let’s get to the books!

FINAL CRISIS #2 (OF 7)
Well, DC treads dangerously close to Infinite Crisis territory in this second installment of Final Crisis, in that I didn’t quite get some parts. The others however, made up for it. Awesome moments with The Mad Hatter, Batman, and the Green Lanterns, along with the worst kept secret in comics, the return of Barry Allen, made this a great issue. A very fun book to read, and it looks like the events of this book might actually mean something for the DCU.

GREEN LANTERN #32
Having just finished the Sinestro Corps War story, it is really cool to see the early interactions between Hal and Sinestro. This story is toeing the line of a Ret-Con of the origins of the Green Lantern, but it’s doing it so well that attempts to re-write history can be overlooked.

SUPERMAN #677
So… Atlas showed up. And Superman and Green Lantern played Frisbee with Krypto. I’m becoming increasingly disappointed with this book. I think this issue just pushed it closer to the “cut” line.

TEEN TITANS #60
This issue launches the new series Terror Titans as Ravager leaves the Titans to strike out on her own. I haven’t been entirely thrilled with this incarnation of the Teen Titans, and Ravager was kind of my last hope that it would continue to be good. I am somewhat apprehensive as to where they are going next, but curious to find out!

AVENGERS INITIATIVE #14
After las month’s mediocre issue, I was worried that this title was going to start spiraling downward. Well, they proved me wrong. The new 3-D Man has a weapon against the Skrulls, but when he uses it at Camp Hammond and it effects everyone, can it be working right? If so then the Skrulls infiltration of The Initiative is not just complete, its TOTAL. Who would have thought I would have cared about 3-D Man, but here I am, anxiously awaiting more!

CAPTAIN AMERICA #39
This was a good and bad issue. It was bad in that it was a little boring. There was a lot of exposition as we get ready for the next chapter of Brubaker’s opus. The good however, is that even at “a little boring” it was still head and shoulders above most of the books I read this week. It perfectly set up the next issue which is the inevitable Cap vs. Cap smackdown. 30 days is too long!!

FANTASTIC FOUR #558
This was easily the best book of the week for me. The start of Hitch and Millar’s second arc was just as great as the last, as we see the FF race to… help? Dr. Doom as he is kidnapped by… The Defenders? Johnny Storm’s relationship falls apart, Valeria is a genius and the return of Smart H– you know what? Just buy the book.

HULK #4
Red Hulk. Green Hulk. Red Hulk punch Uatu. Red Hulk fight Green Hulk. Iron Man ask “Who Red Hulk?” Red Hulk throw Green Hulk off bridge. Thor show up to fight Red Hulk. Any questions?
