Hello all,

I hope those of you who have it are enjoying this Monday off! For some of us though, it’s buisness as usual, and for me that means another installment of The Checklist! This week includes BATMAN RIP Chapter 1, THE TWELVE #5, and a shockingly good CAPTAIN BRITAIN AND MI 13 #1.

Read on to get the dibs on these issues, and don’t forget to tune into the latest episode of The Watchtower Podcast for a deeper looks at evne more comic-y goodness!

SERENITY BETTER DAYS #3 (OF 3)
If you are a fan of Joss Whedon’s unerappreciated Firefly, then you know how exciting it is to get a new story featuring the crew of Serenity. This book has been great through all three parts, and next to a new episode of the show, this is the best thing that hardcore fans can hope for.

BATMAN #676
An interesting first installment to the Batman R.I.P. storyline. Daniels art looks better in this issue than any other so far. Kind of an obvious plot twist involving Bruce’s new girlfriend, but a solid first chapter none the less. As disappointed as I’ve been with Morrison’s run on Batman so far, I’ve been looking forward to the R.I.P. story for a while, and am willing to give it a shot to play itself out.

BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL #17
We start a new 5-part arc with this issue, focusing on Batgirl and Catwoman. If that isn’t enough to put you to sleep, then the fact this book should have been about 4 pages long but somehow was stretched to 24 should do it. Also, Batgirl also gets naked. For no reason. the only high spot in this book is the fantastic tease line for the next issue that reads: “Will Batgirl really follow Catwoman into the Hedonist Society?”

SUPERMAN #676
With the bizarre events of Action Annual #11, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I dove into Superman’s world this week. What I got was an all-right story about memorial day. The high point was seeing a battle with one of may favourite villians, Solomon Grundy, but aside from that, this was a pretty missable issue.

TITANS #2
New penciller Joe Benitez jumps on with this issue… for some reason. His art is good, but it brings a different, more light-hearted feel to the book. If you like Teen Titans, you will like Titans, especially in this more mature grouping. However, the aforementioned change in artist did catch me for a loop, and took away a bit from the big reveal at the end. That said, this is still a pretty decent book, and I’m in for Issue #3

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #559
After last issue’s Snore-fest, I’m glad to say there were a couple of things about this weeks Amazing issue that I enjoyed. Artist Marcos Martin does some great stuff with page layouts, and Dan Slott doesn’t skimp on the comic relief. New villianess Paperdoll has my interest, but I could have done without Screwball. The best part of the issue? No appearance by Menace or Freak. Let’s see if next week can say the same.

CAPTAIN BRITAIN AND MI 13 #1
The first of two Secret Invasion tie-in books this week was actually pretty good. We get a first hand look at an actual battle with the Super-Skrulls, as well as how they have infiltrated the British Government. A solid read, with a great ending. I can’t believe it, but I’m actually looking forward to Issue #2.

GIANT SIZE INCREDIBLE HULK #1
Here’s the thing about this book. It looks like it was coloured with magic markers. I don’t know if that was intentional, but it’s how it looks. The story is a loose re-telling of The Hulk’s origin, probably to give people who don’t know it a chance to get caught up before the movie comes out next month. There is also a re-print of Hulk Annual #7 that’s laughable at best. Might be interesting for the Purple Pants crowd, but easily missable for everyone else.

NEWUNIVERSAL SHOCKFRONT #1 (OF 6)
It seems like Warren Ellis puts out a new series every week, but one of his most underrated from last year was Newuniversal. Set in a uninverse where superpowered beings are just emerging thanks to a cosmic event, this sequel to the series starts off with a bang (literally) and we are introduced to a couple more possible superpowered people. Not a bad start, but the first installment lagged a bit in the middle. Hopefully Shockfront wont have that problem.

SECRET INVASION FANTASTIC FOUR #1 (OF 3)
When we last left the Fantastic Four in Secret Invasion, they had just been sucked into the Negative Zone by a Skrull posing as Sue Storm. This book takes place in the N-Zone as Johnny interrogates the Sue-Skrull and The Thing fights off the invading N-Zone Monsters. Not a bad book, I’m glad to see it’s ties to the main series are very strong. For 3 Issues, I think I can hang in.

TWELVE #5 (OF 12)
Another stellar issue from JMS and crew. We learn the origin of the grim Witness, see the arrest of The Laughing Mask, and a great bit of continuity tie-in when Dynamic Man registers with the government. Can a Secret Invasion nod be far off? Honestly, I hope so. But it was cool seeing the registration issue affecting our displaced heroes. Still one of my favourite books out there.

WOLVERINE #65
I was a big fan of this run, Logan on the hunt for the betrayer Mystique. We got a lot of great insight into both characters, as well as a ton of wonderfully violent fight scenes. But the ending of this arc was in no way satisfying. It was a cheap way out of a great story. At least I have the upcoming Millar/McNiven “Old Man Logan” story to make up for it.

PROJECT SUPERPOWERS #3 (OF 7)
This book is a breath of fresh air in an industry that often rests on it’s laurels. In this issue we meet several new faces, now freed from the Yank’s Urn, and ready to solve the mystery of how they got there. There’s a great fight scene, great foreshadowing, and as always, great character development. One of the smartest books out there today.
