Future-Casting: Secret Invasion #1

For all intents and purposes, there is pretty much only one book being released this Wednesday: Secret Invasion #1. The long awaited story of the Skrulls infiltration of the Marvel Universe kicks off here in an extra-sized Issue that promises to be chock full of surprises and I am sure, message board fodder.
When I first heard about this storyline, I can admit, I was not exactly jazzed. Skrulls to this point had been about as interesting to me as an invasion of multiple Steve Urkels (for those of you too young to remember The Urkel, do some Googling). Even the recent attempts to include Skrulls in the “young” Marvel teams, Runaways and Young Avengers had me yawning. I was not really looking forward to a story where all the strange things that had been happening were explained away by someone simply not being who they said they were.
Times, however, do change.
This Wednesday, when Secret Invasion hit’s the stands, I will be first in line to pick up a copy. The way that Bendis and the entire Marvel writing staff have weaved the tales of Secret Invasion: The Infiltration throughout the Marvel U has been absolutely brilliant. These guys have managed to do what DC couldn’t do with both 52 and Countdown. They have created an air of mystery and excitement throughout the entire universe of their characters, and taken me as a reader along for the ride. I can’t remember the last time that I thought so much about a Ms. Marvel book, but now I find myself analyzing every aspect of the issues I have, looking for clues. World War Hulk and Civil War were both incredible in their own right, but to have the underlying suspicions and knowledge that something bigger was on the horizon added a previously unheard of dimension to both events.
I could not be more excited for this book. I don’t know what it is about Marvel “events” vs DC “crisis’” but I always find myself enjoying the Marvel series more. It just seems like the Marvel writers and artists all go to great lengths to ensure that their continuity is fluid, even on top of delays, and guest artist/writer fill-ins. This is not to say that DC isn’t great in it’s own right, and that I won’t be eagerly anticipating Final Crisis. All I’m saying is that I often feel like I am missing something within DC “crisis.’”
Secret Invasion #1 hits stands this Wednesday, and I don’t expect the rollercoaster ride to stop until the last page of Issue #8. The Watchtower will have full coverage and analysis, so stay tuned!!
Gee… changing my mind about something this big?… that seems awfully Skrully of me….
